As from 1970, till the time of her death, Travelbee served as the Project Director of Graduate Education at Louisiana State University School of Nursing (Petiprin, 2016). The theory she developed has lived on regardless of her premature death. The theory still influences the nursing profession, healthcare and the hospice movement as a whole. Joyce Travelbee, born in 1926, was a psychiatric nurse, educator and writer.
In 1963, Travelbee started to publish various articles in nursing journals. Her first book entitled Interpersonal Aspects of Nursing was published in 1966 and 1971. Joyce Travelbee passed away in September 1973 at 47 years of age. She was born on December 14, 1925.
